Live How You Like, Leave How You Like

Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us at our recent fundraiser dedicated to advancing the implementation of medical aid in dying. The Completed Life graciously hosted the event in our honor and we cannot thank them enough for their kindness. Your presence, generosity, and heartfelt commitment made the evening truly meaningful. It was inspiring to see so many individuals come together, united by a shared belief in dignity, autonomy, and thoughtful end-of-life care.

Throughout the event, we were reminded of the strength and resilience of this small community. Medical aid in dying may not yet be widely known, but for those who need it, its availability brings profound comfort and gratitude. Your support truly makes a difference—especially because this is an area that often receives less attention than more visible causes. By standing behind it, you help ensure that compassionate, end-of-life choices remain accessible to those who rely on them most. One supporter shared, “What struck me most tonight is how powerful this support is, even though it comes from a relatively small group of people who truly understand the need for this law. So many people will want this option one day, but most don’t think about it until it’s too late. Being here reminded me how important it is to keep raising awareness and standing up for this cause now.”

Because of your support, we are one step closer to ensuring that individuals facing serious illness have access to compassionate options and the care they deserve. Your contributions directly help expand awareness, education, and implementation efforts, bringing us closer to a future where choice and dignity are accessible to all. If you did not make your donation at the event, or were unable to attend, it is not too late! You can make a donation here and make sure that patients have the access to this end of life care when they need it.

We are deeply grateful for your partnership and belief in this mission. Together, we are making a lasting difference.

Sincerely,
Mandi Zucker
Executive Director

Update on Medical Aid in Dying Implementation

We are thrilled with the progress we are making on there implementation of Medical Aid in Dying. We have been told by other states who have this law that we are way ahead of where they were prior to implementation. In fact, many states did not even have an organization like ours until after implementation so there was little to no coordination and it made it much harder for patients to access services early on. I am thrilled that we are here for New Yorkers and are already connecting them to doctors that will be able to support them.

We are aware of many doctors, hospices and hospital systems that will either provide full services or support patients who will be utilizing medical aid in dying. We know five pharmacies that are considering providing the needed medication and several other in-house pharmacies that are working with their hospital systems. This is incredibly positive news which all confirms that we will be ready on the day one to provide excellent care to those that need it.

We have also spoken to several patients who are interested in considering medical aid in dying and have already begun connecting them to physicians to pre-plan as much as they can which receiving quality care. We are honored to be able to coordinate this part of the process. If you are in need, please reach out to us! If you are a clinician of any sort (doctor, nurse, social worker, chaplain, volunteer, doula, or hospital/hospice system), please complete this survey. The answers to this survey will not be made public but will allow us to reach out to you to offer you the opportunity to connect with patients based on their needs.

Please continue to share the flyer highlighting our partnership with the Academy of Aid-in-Dying Medicine with anyone you think could benefit from resources and education. Together with The Academy, we are your go-to source for all things related to the implementation of excellent aid-in-dying care. Please reach out to us with questions, concerns and needs.

If you learn of trainings in your community, please forward them to us so we can reach out and let them know about the support we can provide. We are thrilled that we have been seeing trainings popping up and we want to support any organization to provide the best quality care possible.

We are also getting many requests by major media outlets to interview people who are considering this option when it becomes available. This is an important way we can use the media to bring more awareness about this option. If you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and will likely be eligible to use medical aid in dying in the next 6-12 months, and you’d be willing to talk to the media either in print or on TV, please let me know. I can put you in touch with very sensitive reporters and producers who want to help share your story in a compassionate and dignified manner.

Ask Us Anything

Q: Can I write that I want medical aid in dying in my advance care plan?

A: You cannot rely on an advance care plan to access medical aid in dying. Even if you document your wishes in advance, they will only be honored if you meet the legal eligibility criteria at the time you choose to take the medication. This means you must be mentally competent and physically able to self-administer the medication at that moment. Including a request in your advance care plan for medical aid in dying if you later become ineligible does not override these requirements.
