We are excited to announce that End of Life Choices New York will be hosting online events as part of Reimagine: Life, Loss, & Love, a worldwide virtual festival hosted by Reimagine during COVID-19. Reimagine End of Life is a nonprofit that organizes in-person and online festivals exploring big questions about life and death through creativity and conversation. The festival kicked off May 1 and will run through July 9. Registration is officially open for the events below, and we hope to soon add more events to our program.
The Case for Medical Aid in Dying in New York

Panelists will discuss the Medical Aid in Dying Act (being considered by the legislature) from their perspectives as a doctor, lawyer, legislator, person living with cancer, and person with disabilities. The esteemed panel includes, Barbara A. Backer, RN DSW; David C. Leven, JD; Assemblymember Amy Paulin; Benny Pollak; and Timothy E. Quill, MD.
Voluntarily Stopping Eating & Drinking (VSED): An Overview

EOLCNY’s Clinical Director, Judith Schwarz, PhD, will be discussing voluntarily stopping eating and drinking as a peaceful, legal option to hasten death. The presentation will include background clinical and legal information about VSED, and a video presentation of an elderly woman who chose a VSED death. The video was lovingly made by her daughter with her consent and covers the duration of her “fast.”
Planning for a Better End of Life: A Guide to Navigating Today’s Healthcare System

A presentation and discussion on: palliative care and how/when it can benefit you; telling your doctors about your end of life care wishes; health care proxies, a living wills, and other directives; how hospice care can improve quality of life. There will be an opportunity to ask questions following the presentation. This event is made possible through a grant from the New York Foundation for Eldercare.
