Live How You Like, Leave How You Like

I was originally introduced to End of Life Choices New York over 15 years ago when I moved in to New York City. We moved into the city for my husband’s job which we knew would be a two year gig. So we rented our house in NJ and moved into an apartment with our 7 and 9 year old boys prepared to make new friends and explore the city like real locals.

I remember meeting my first friend at the playground while I was watching my kids. She had a son the same age as one of mine and they lived in our building. How great! I told her about our planned adventure and you know what was the first thing she told me? “Don’t tell anyone you are only going to be here for two years.” She explained that people wouldn’t want to invest their time in me or my children if they knew we’d be leaving so soon, and if I wanted my kids to make friends, keep quiet about the temporary part of our journey.

Honestly, I didn’t give it much thought at the time, except to think, “OK, I won’t tell anyone.” But after a while, I felt like I was lying. And I had a big secret that I didn’t want to keep. And if people can’t make time and space for someone who was only moving across the bridge into Union county, NJ in a few years I didn’t want to be their friend anyway. So I shared my truth. There were definitely some people who were more hesitant with me. And others that thought it would be cool to have a friend in the ‘burbs so they could get out of the city in the summers and come visit us. The gift that sharing this information gave us was also being able to talk about leaving, and how sad we were to be moving away from the good friends we made (but also happy to be moving back to our old friends and home). Ultimately, I’m glad I was honest. I think it made me feel closer to others, and allowed them to be closer to me.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, as so many of you have been calling asking us to support you through the process of medical aid in dying. We listen to your stories, hear the heartache in your voices as you share your truths of illness and impending death. We come to care deeply about each of you that we speak with, knowing that you will only be in our lives for short periods of time.

We know why we do what we do. The goal is often that you have a peaceful death, and we bring you closer to that moment many times. And that’s hard. But it’s also so important and profound. We truly feel honored that each of you that calls us trusts us with your story and your heart. And we carry you with us even after you are gone.

Thank you for allowing us to play a role in your story.

Sincerely,
Mandi Zucker, LSW, CT

Update on Medical Aid in Dying Implementation

We continue to provide incredible services for New Yorkers seeking medical aid in dying. We have been hearing from people all over the state and have been able to successfully connect them to providers, for whom we are incredibly grateful! Medical aid in dying implementation has been going strong! We have referred over approximately 40 people to providers as they seek end of life care. While we continue to provide support to New Yorkers as they call, we are also connecting with more and more clinicians that are interested in providing this care. We have added more doctors to our list of providers which will allow more people to receive care in a timely manner. If you are a patient needing coordination of services, please complete this intake form and we will work to make the needed referrals. EOLCNY also created a comprehensive guide to medical aid in dying in NY that can be accessed on our website and/or downloaded if needed.

We also started a new working group with independent doctors from around the state that are providing, or are working to provide, aid-in-dying care. This group of doctors are sharing resources to set up the legal and business necessities to run their practices. If you are a doctor in NY that would like to join this small group, please reach out to me.

If you are meeting with your doctor in the next few weeks or months, don’t forget to ask them if they will be providing aid in dying care! If they are interested, please make an introduction so we can provide them with all the support they need! Share this flyer with them or ask if they’d be open to a conversation about medical aid in dying with End of Life Choices New York and The Academy of Aid-in-Dying Medicine. We would be happy to schedule a call to introduce them to the practice and provide resources for them to feel competent and capable to practice in this area.

In the next newsletter, we will share another big announcement that will be sure to make accessing medical aid in dying more accessible for everyone, so please stay tuned for that as well!

If you learn of trainings in your community, please forward them to us so we can reach out and let them know about the support we can provide. We are thrilled that we have been seeing trainings popping up and we want to support any organization to provide the best quality care possible.

We continue to receive many requests by major media outlets to interview people who are considering this option when it becomes available. This is an important way we can use the media to bring more awareness about this option. If you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and will likely be eligible to use medical aid in dying in the next 6-12 months, and you’d be willing to talk to the media either in print or on TV, please let me know. I can put you in touch with very sensitive reporters and producers who want to help share your story in a compassionate and dignified manner.

Ask Us Anything

Q: Once the doctor orders the prescription for my aid-in-dying medications, can I take them any time I want?

A: There is a provision in the law that says that the pharmacy is not able to dispense the medication for five days once the prescription is sent to them. There is a waiver for people who may die within those five days but most people will need to wait for this time.
