Live How You Like, Leave How You Like

Dear Friends,

As we wait for Governor Hochul to sign the Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) Act into law in New York, I want to remind you that End of Life Choices New York is continuing to provide programming, resources and support to people at the end of life, or considering end of life plans, that do not include MAID. In fact, we have several learning opportunities coming up that we are very excited about, and hope you will join us. There are programs focusing on dementia, planning for a good death, talking about death and dying with friends and family, as well as celebrations planned to get together and congratulate us all on the passage of the MAID bill and learn more about implementation (we are still working on the details of our first event so stay tuned for that in an upcoming newsletter).

Read on to learn more about these events and mark your calendars to attend some! Are there topics you would like us to cover in upcoming programming, or do you have an idea about an event that we could put together? Reach out to me and let me know! I love to hear from you and, obviously, we want to provide programming that reflects the needs of our community, so don’t be a stranger!

Sincerely,
Mandi Zucker, LSW, CT
Executive Director

What’s Happening with Medical Aid in Dying?

The Academy of Aid-in-Dying Medicine (AADM) has published a 7-course overview of evidence-based best practices for front line clinicians who are working, or plan to work, with patients interested in aid-in-dying care. The content, which is about 60-90 minutes for each course, is free to watch and provides excellent training (I have watched it myself and can attest that no matter your level of education, you will learn A LOT!)

If you are a front line clinician, or know one, please watch or share this content.

Additionally, we have partnered with AADM to do outreach to hospitals, physicians and other clinicians to let them know about training opportunities. If you know of a healthcare system or practitioners that may be interested in learning more about providing this compassionate care, please refer them to us or introduce them via email. If you learn of trainings in your community, please forward them to us so we can reach out and let them know about the support we can provide. We are thrilled that we have been seeing trainings popping up and we want to support any organization to provide the best quality care possible.

This article is a concise summary of the bill with the proposed amendments, and the impact it could have on patients and families. Please reach out if you have questions after you read it.

Ask Us Anything

Q: Is there any state in the country that allows for medical aid in dying due to pain alone, if there is no terminal illness with a 6 month or less prognosis?

A: No. Pain alone is not an eligibility criteria for accessing medical aid in dying in any state in this country. Some people have heard about other countries that do allow for this to qualify for medical assistance in dying, but none of the states that currently allow for MAID allow for that criteria, nor are there any significant efforts to expand laws to include pain as an eligibility criteria. If you are experiencing pain, talk to your doctor about palliative care, which often is able to adequately manage pain.
