EARLY DEMENTIA AND TREATMENT CHOICES AT END OF LIFE: A NEW ADVANCE DIRECTIVE
June 6, 2018, 6-8 pm
Overview:
As the incidence of dementia and Alzheimer’s increases in the U.S., in conjunction with longer life spans, there is growing awareness and desire by individuals and their families to make informed decisions while decision-making capacity is present. A new, unique advance directive will be presented, addressing end-of-life treatment choices designed for those with early dementia, including explicit instructions about assisted oral feeding, symptom management through hospice or palliative medical oversight, and a description of advanced dementia. The historical context, clinical cases, and various challenges– cultural, familial, emotional, professional, legal–will be discussed by the presenter and respondents.
