Live How You Like, Leave How You Like

Well, we did a monumental thing! We launched our new website, with a new logo to go with it! It was an absolute labor of love, and we could not be more proud and excited to share it with all of you! Special thanks to board member, Karyn Schorr, who truly was a partner with me in this endeavor. And thanks to many of you who contributed as well (Ruth Nordenbrook is a wonderful photographer who donated many of the photos used as well) and so many of you gave us feedback on the logo and the website design.

I wanted to take a minute and explain the goal around the rebrand. A new website was necessary- the old one was literally breaking. We’d receive error messages regularly that the site was down, couldn’t store more information, wasn’t accepting new donations, and was generally not accessible to users. So it needed to be done. But it also was looking a bit tired. When we hired our website designers (shout out to BCS Interactive – they were amazing to work with!), I told them that I felt like our website, much like what many people think about the topic we highlight, looks depressing. It looks like my childhood basement, with the dark wood paneling and fluorescent lights. I told them I want to bring the topic of death and dying out of the basement and into the living room. A room filled with light, welcoming all those who visit. And I think we have accomplished that. We chose colors and fonts that are easily readable, used a lot of white space to make it easier to see things, and used language that should make it easy to find information and understand it.

The logo also got a refresh. It is meant to symbolize the pages of our lives, continuously moving and changing. We hope to write our final chapter so we left it open. It is meant to symbolize the education that we provide, along with the compassion and human heart we provide it with. We hope this is your experience when working with us.

Please check out our new website. Look around and see if you find things you didn’t see before. If you have feedback, please share it with me as we are still making a few tweaks and want it to reflect the needs of our community.

How We are Preparing for Medical Aid in Dying in NY

We have been working hard preparing for the eventual implementation of medical aid in dying. This week, we had our third meeting in coordination with the Academy of Aid in Dying Medicine. A group of over 30 clinicians, including doctors, nurse practitioners, health care administrators, lawyers, social workers and others discussed outreach, curriculum development, and action steps needed prior to the implementation of this law. We are well positioned already and feel confident that when the governor signs this bill, we will have clinicians of all kinds ready to support patients who are considering this option. A Message for Governor Hochul

The most frequently asked question I hear when I pick up the phone lately is “What is taking the governor so long to sign the bill?” I wish we had an answer for you, but I can tell you that we do not think her delay has anything to do with her decision to sign or not sign the bill. We had heard a rumor that she may sign around Labor Day, which obviously didn’t happen. I am preparing myself for her to wait until the end of December at this point, and while I don’t like the thought that she is waiting, it does provide us with time to continue working on a smooth implementation plan and gives us more time to remind her how important this bill is.

Please continue reaching out to her with your support. A supporter of ours, Kelli Dunham, recently shared this video with me. It illustrates the beauty of medical aid in dying, despite the terrible result of having the person you love die. This video highlights the gift of choice and control at the end of life, and if you want that as well, please reach out to the governor and let her know that. We are trying to connect with her in any way we can – personal letters, signatures on petitions, phone calls, online contact forms, and emails. So if this video speaks to you, forward it to her and ask her to watch it.

A: End of Life Choices New York is part of a group of nonprofits across the country, trying to bring more awareness to this option for everyone.
